1963. Satyajit Ray movie based on a short story. A middle class family struggles to keep afloat when the husband's parents come to live with them. The wife takes up a job as a salesgirl and does exceedingly well too. Meanwhile, the husband loses his job. The parents do not like the idea of the daughter in law working and that pressurises the husband. The Anglo Indian friend of the wife, her liberating influence on her, the wife's clear sense of right and wrong and the actual liberation - the idea that she can now find a job anywhere. Lovely.
