It's a classic. 1966. One of those highly creative times. Balthazar is a donkey and the story starts when it is born and is baptised. What makes the movie great is that it tracks the lives of Balthazar and its owner Marie as they lead parallel lives.
The two encounter many owners and relationships as they go about their lives and often suffer abuse from the same people all through their lives until they almost break. Marie has a life still, broken, but alive. Balthazar however suffers too much abuse to endure it anymore. Inspired by Dostoevsky's 'Idiot' each episode in Balthazar's life is supposed to represent the seven deadly sins. Jean-luc Godard said that this was really the world in an hour.
