What's the mark of a classic? Across ages - from the eighty six year old to the eight year old in the room - everyone stayed glued to the screen from the start to the finish without a moment's drop in energy as the tale of two pairs of twins unfolded in a comedy of errors. The movie is based on Shakespeare's play 'Comedy of Errors'.
So two pairs of twins, one pair of twins of the master, meet another pair of twins that the master adopts. The family gets separated in a storm. The grown up pairs meet accidentally in a town where the bachelor twin Ashok (Sanjeev Kumar) wants to buy some property. The detective novel smitten Ashok worries about the cash and specially about leaving it with Bahadur (Deven Varma) who loves a daily dose of bhaang. Between passwords and suspicious characters, they find themselves being mixed up with a respectable citizen of the town, the other Ashok and the other Bahadur. Now where these two are married, the other two are unmarried throwing up some impossible situations including one where the two unmarried ones are stuck at home with the women and somehow have to get out. It's funny, endearing and immensely watchable for the many parts and performances.
Deepti Naval, Moushumi Chatterjee, Aruna Irani and a host of interesting characters spice up the proceedings. I am amazed how forward thse movies were is evident in the fact that Ashok (married) has a woman friend Alka and everyone is in the know about it. Alka actually is trying to play the peace keeper between husband and wife. Crazy.
