The Ahmedabad Diaries - Day 3 (Sarkhez Rosa)

The match got over pretty soon and we decided to head to Sarkhez Rosa which is listed in sights to see. I was some 7 kms away and we got an auto to go there. The place is a mosque and tomb complex of Sufi saint Shaikh Ahmed Ganj Baksh (1445 d) who was most revered and who they say suggested that Sultan Ahmed Shah build his capital on the banks of River Sabarmati.

The architects of the place are two brothers of Persian origin (whats with these Persian architects dude) Azam and Muazzam Khan. The entire place was built over an area of 34 acres with gardens all around the main tomb of the saint.

Later on the Sultan Mahmud Begada constructed a man made lake with cut stone steps, two palaces by the side of the lake, one for his queen Raja bai. He also built a mausoleum where his tomb now lies with his son and grandson and another for his wife Rajabai.

The construction of the mosque is very simple and overlooks the lake to one side.

Sarkhez Rosa is called the Acropolis of Ahmedabad. The area apparently was once famous for its indigo prompting the Dutch to erect a factory there.

Recently the film 'Raees' starring SRK was shot here.
