The Ahmedabad Diaries - Jama Masjid (Day 2 contd)

We hired an auto to Jama Masjid which I read actually means Friday mosque. The Jama Masjid in Ahmedabad was built in 1424 by Ahmad Shah who founded the city in 1411. Its located in the old city, the old walled city with its many darwazas, narrow lanes filled with vendors and people. The entrance is modest.

We were a bit apprehensive about whether we could take pictures etc and asked a young man who said we could take pictures of the structures but not inside the mosque. He said we could walk into the mosque as well but not to take pictures there. There was a huge courtyard, the mosque itself which is well maintained, a tank for ablutions in the middle and so on.

Jyo sat in a corner near the ablutions tank while Martin and I walked around clicking pictures. After we had our fill, we went back outside and wore our shoes. The next job was to locate Hotel Nishat which was suggested to us by Mushtaq from Bai Hirar Mosque. Google kept showing us in circles and I was a bit confused when Martin decided to take charge - I will take you there - he said and led the way. We walked a bit and came to Teen Darwaza which is a magnificent structure in itself. To its right we found Hotel Nishat. No wonder Martin is getting along easily in India.

Hotel Nishat reminded me of Karims in Delhi. Martin said he would try anything long as it was not too spicy. We ordered some roti (very nice, soft and hot) and some Nishat special mutton curry (quite tasty). Martin fought tooth and nail to pay the bill but we told him to relax.

He decided to join us for the next part of our sight seeing - Jhulta Minar and booked an auto.
