Off to Ahmedabad with Jyo by the 1035 flight which will land us there at an ungodly hour. The trip started rather well because I got off the Uber and walked off speaking on my bluetooth speakers little realising that I had left my phone behind. I found the driver (who i found rather irritating - how mistaken are we and how judgmental are we) running behind me with my phone in hand. If he had not glanced behind and seen the phone my trip would have ended right there. But it didn't. The guardian angels seem to be looking at me with a kindly eye.
View from the room - foggy life |
I read 'The Mountain is You' along the flight, refused upma, and did stuff like that. At Ahmedabad airport we got ourselves a nice Uber and headed off to the hotel, checked and settled down by 2 in the morning. Our match is at 9 in the morning so we need to rush.
Boy flying kite |
The weather in A'bad is not too cold, very bearable. However I do not see the sun until 7 am, there is some kind of a fog that's on all the time. I realised its there most of the day and it gets a little warm only midday types. The roads are clean though a little narrow, buildings generally flat and not reaching for the skies, scooters with the manja protectors, ghatia and chai sellers, lots if greenery and so on. On the way back from the game we stopped at some ghatia place and had chai and stuff which I am not too thrilled with - the ghatia I mean.
Sabarmati river front |
Jyo and I ventured out to find the Sabarmati riverfront which we found was right behind the hotel and we walked along in the misty evening for a bit quite thrilled at the spectacle. The Sabramati river is well contained and full unlike say the Viswamitra river in Baroda which is but a stream (full of crocodiles).
Can park bike up there |
The riverfront has been developed for a few miles on either side - wide pavements with a ledge to sit on, can ride your scooters on to the pavement and sit and enjoy watching the river and the lights. There is so much place to sit that even if all Ahmedabad turned up there would be enough place I feel.
Group of friends chilling |
The people sitting on the riverfront including young lovers are generally left alone and no moral police stops them. Groups of friends, single women chatting on the phone, solo men catching up on Whatsapp news, all in a tranquil. clean, undisturbed space. Add a misty wintry evening and it looks perfect.
Another view |
The river curves away to one side, there are bridges at intervals connecting the old city to the new I guess, one can see the metro line going past. One an also step down to the river front where there is a longer walk, cycle riding path which Jyo and I decided to explore the next day. For now happy to have discovered this wonderful place, happy to see that there were no 'NO' signs all over.
Pots shop |
I checked the local sights with the hotel and they showed a nice catalog. Looks like there are a lot of interesting things to do here.
