Staying present cuts out the stress. Stress is normally your attachment to the result which makes you worry about all the things that could go wrong in the future. By not thinking about the past or the future, you stay present, and just watch the game unfold without stress.
I tried it recently in one of the crucial games when I could see my body reacting to the stress - sweat, heartbeat etc - and then I decided to switch to merely watching it in the present moment, as it unfolds, without thinking of the future outcomes.
Worked beautifully.
