Thought for the Day - You Won't Get Hurt if You Don't Take Things Personally

People say things we don't like. We get hurt. We think they have misunderstood us. We feel they should have understood us differently.

But they don't. They understand it as they see it. That's all. It's about how they see things. Their perspective. Nothing to get hurt about.

I was chatting with Sagar the other day and he told me how he would take things personally. I told him about the four agreements - always be impeccable with your word, don't take things personally, don't make assumptions and always give your best. He loved the one about not taking things personally. He feels it can change his life. In fact this morning he called me and said it had already made a change in his life.

People talk about what they see, and understand. It's about them and their story. Not about us. We don't need to get dragged into it. We don't need to waste our time and energy. We can listen, make them feel heard and move on.

I like the line in the book 'The Four Agreements' where he says that when we don't take things personally we can go all over the world with an open heart and say 'I love you' without fear and not get hurt. Nothing can hurt you.
