One of the most powerful phrases or questions that opens up human connection is perhaps a genuinely, gently asked 'How are you?' When I say 'genuinely asked', I mean that it must elicit a reaction, a genuine reaction instead of a 'I'm good' or 'All fine'. One can fine tune that asking capability by practice - you cannot get away by merely saying 'I asked' but nothing happened.
If asked right and if a connection can be made, humans can connect into each other and understand each other's frame of mind, their difficulties, their apprehensions, their goals and desires, their fears, their ways of dealing with life. Just asking that question, conveys that you are interested in genuinely knowing what the other is going through. And that can be a lifesaver.
That feeling that someone is interested in knowing about how you were, is what most people need to stop feeling alone, to stop feeling like they have to deal with life by themselves. It makes life bearable, it makes life seem connected.
It takes a huge burden off.
