Hyderabad by Walk - Hussaini Alam Ashoorkhana

This is one of the oldest Ashoorkhanas in the city (1600s) and has an interesting story behind it. The young son of the sixth Sultan of the Qutb Shah dynasty, Muhammad Qutb Shah, Abdullah Qutb Shah once went away into the jungles on his elephant which went wild, and killed its mahout.

To get her son back his mother and the wife of the Sultan, Hayath Baksh Begum had food packets tied to trees and prayed that she would offer a gold chain (langar) if her son and the elephant returned safely and also that her son would walk barefoot to the Hussaini Alam Ashoorkhana and offer prayers and langar.

The langar procession which started in the early 1600s was celebrated with great pomp on the 5th Muharram until the 20th century when the seventh Nizam stopped the practice.

The Hussaini Alam Kaman leads into the Ashoorkhana and is big enough for an elephant to pass. The Ashoorkhana itself is a small lime mortar and stone masonry structure with interesting architecture, a roof with jack arches and so on.

The Alams were on display and we took a picture at the Ashoorkhana before we left.
